While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart.

I have struggled over these words of Francis – their meaning – and it seems God is trying to tell me that before I say or do anything – no matter how good – I must find Christ's peace within. If I am not at peace, in harmony and fully open to His work of grace within me, I am no good, of no use or help, to anyone else, especially myself. Though these words are gentle, simple in sound and appearance – they challenge me to the core of my spiritual life. Thank you for sharing them with me – letting me hear the voice of my Lord Jesus, through His servant, the little poor man. Peace to you!
